Blog Post 12 - Nonfiction Informational Text - You Hear With Your Ears by Melvin and Gilda Berger

A child showing off his ears.

You Hear With Your Ears by Melvin and Gilda Berger is a nonfiction informational text. This book is simple, and it teaches kids about how their ears work. It also talks about how sound travels through the ear and what kinds of sounds the ear can hear. It uses captions throughout the book to provide the reader with some fun facts.

This book is a nonfiction information text because by reading the book, the reader is gaining information about the topic of how the ear works. The colorful photographs provide realistic pictures for the reader as well, and the fun fact captions give some useful information as well.

One activity a teacher can do with the book is have the children listen to a CD with different sounds. As they are listening, they will have to identify what the sound is. Some of the sounds will be soft and some will be a little louder.

This is a simple book that would be a good supplement to a unit on sound or on the five senses. This book has predictable text and is written for children ages 5 to 7. I would recommend a teacher use this text in their classroom to help supplement a unit or even during independent reading. Other books written by Melvin and Gilda Berger are also nonfiction texts with titles like: BearsCan You Hear a Shout in Space?and Do Tornadoes Really Twist?

  1. One activity that a teacher could do when using this book in their classroom is after you have read the book, students can play a game of hide-n-go listen. This is just like hide-n-go seek except the hider had to make noises in order to help the finder find them. It is all about using your sense of hearing, which will go great with this book!

    1. Another great activity would be to do Simon says but with the students eyes closed so that they can only use their sense of hearing in order to heat the commands!
