Blog Post 5 - Folklore - Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Jim Aylesworth

                                                            Goldilocks and the Three Bears

The first book I chose is Goldilocks and the Three Bears Retold by Jim Aylesworth and Illustrated by Barbara McClintock. In this version of the story the main character Goldilocks goes for a walk because she is bored. Her mother tells her not to wander too far off into the woods. Goldilocks does not listen to her mother and she wanders into the woods. Once she is in the woods she comes across a house where the three bears live. She enters the home while the three bears are out for walk. While she is there she eats their porridge, she breaks little bear’s rocking chair and then sleeps in their beds. When the bears return, they find Goldilocks sleeping in Baby Bears bed and she wakes up and runs out of the house and through the woods back home.

The illustrations in this version of the story are light and airy and have bright colors. They help the reader visualize the story in their minds by showing the different size chairs and beds. The language in the story is easy to understand and has a natural rhythm to it. It allows the students the further visualize the story and the antics of Goldilocks.

The students can respond in the Reading response journal by answering the following questions: What mistake did Goldilocks make when she left her home? What should Goldilocks do when she gets lost in the woods? What would you do if you found the house that the three little bears live in? A final project you can do in the classroom is compare and contrastdifferent versions of Goldilocks and the Three Little Bears.

I liked this version of Goldilocks as it is the one that I remember from my childhood. Other books writing by Paul Aylesworth are The Gingerbread Man, The Mitten, Our Abe Lincoln and Old Black Fly as well as many others.
